Diagnostic Injections for the Sacroiliac Joint
When the SI joint is suspected as the source of the patient’s low back pain, confirmation is provided by image-guided injection. This injection is the diagnostic “litmus test” for SI joint conditions.
SI Joint Diagnostic Injection
When a local anaesthetic is injected into the sacroiliac joint and symptoms temporarily resolve, this is confirmation of the SI joint as the source of the patient’s low back pain.
If, following the injection, the patient's pain is decreased a significant amount, then it can be concluded that the SI joint is either the source, or a major contributor, to the low back pain.121
The current standard is that an SI joint injection should be performed under fluoroscopic guidance, utilizing contrast to confirm needle placement, injecting no more than 2 ccs. of solution whether it's a diagnostic and/or a therapeutic injection.
